An Invitation to 1st Year Students – Putting Your Best Foot Forward

Save the Date!

K&L Gates and PPG Industries invites all first year students to “Putting Your Best Foot Forward: Exploring Traits of Successful Junior Lawyers” to be held on April 13, 2015, at 5:00 p.m. at the K&L Gates office downtown.  This program will feature a diverse group of legal professionals for an interactive panel discussion which will focus on how best to prepare and present yourself as you enter the legal market and explore traits of successful junior lawyers.

Following the program, please plan to join us for a networking reception.

A formal invitation will follow.  This program is part of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity Program.

The following 1L Job Search Series Programs will be repeated early in the Spring Semester so you can get your materials ready for job & internship opportunities ahead of you.

NOTE – The schedule has changed since it was originally published.  The resume and cover letter programs have been combined into one so students interested in attending the Legal Skills Program on January 13 may do so without a scheduling conflict.

Crafting a Legal Resume & Drafting a Cover Letter Workshop – 1L Job Search Series
Wednesday, January 14 * 12:00-1:00 p.m. OR 5:00-6:00 p.m. * Room 304

Attend this workshop so you are prepared to submit application materials to employers for summer opportunities.  Bring your laptop if you would like and revise your resume and cover letter as we go through the program.  This program is part of the 1L Job Search Series offered by the CSO, and it is a repeat of the workshops that were offered in the Fall Semester.  Please RSVP via DuqLawConnect – Events tab.

Bar Associations & Professional Organizations Day

Students are encouraged to stop by the Student Lounge for Bar Associations & Professional Organizations Day on Tuesday, November 4 from 12:00-1:00 pm and 5:00-6:00 pm.  Attorneys and representatives from the following groups will be at the Law School to meet students and tell them about student membership opportunities:

1L Job Search Series Fall 2014 – Updated Schedule

*Please RSVP to these programs via DuqLawConnect – Events tab. If you are not able to attend a program in its entirety because of a class or work conflict, you are welcome to attend as much of it as you can.

*All students are welcome to meet individually with Maria Comas, Director of Career Services, to discuss your job search, resume and cover letter at any time. Meetings may be scheduled between 9:30 am – 6:00 pm by sending a request to comas@duq.edu.  Please include some dates & times that work for you.

*First year students are encouraged to attend general CSO programs throughout the semester as well as these programs specifically targeted to first year students!

ACBA 1L Diversity Summer Clerkship Program Information Session
Friday, October 31, 12:00-1:00 p.m., Room 301

Alysia Keating, Director of Diversity & Gender Equality with the Allegheny County Bar Association (ACBA), will tell you about the program, which provides diverse first year law students an opportunity to work in private law firms, corporations or government offices during the summer after their first year of law school. The application process will begin soon, and this is your chance to learn about the program and ask your questions. Lunch will be provided.

Bar Association & Professional Organizations Day
Tuesday, November 4, 12:00-1:00 p.m. and 5:00-6:00 p.m., Student Lounge

Many bar associations and professional legal organizations offer student memberships, and attorneys will be here to tell you about their various groups. Stop by the tables in the lounge and learn about ways in which you can get involved this year. There’s no obligation to join any group on Tuesday. Students who attend will be entered into a drawing to win gift cards and other items.

(Note: Many evening students have unique job search circumstances, and the CSO is planning a panel presentation in the Spring Semester with graduates of the evening division where they will discuss the job search plans they had during law school, things they had to consider (such as financial obligations) and suggestions they have for you. Additional details to follow.)
