Most students find their jobs outside of the On-Campus Interview (OCI) program each year. A panel of attorneys will tell you how they found their jobs directly out of law school. What worked for them? What didn’t? Some of the panelists obtained their jobs through a targeted mailing while others got theirs through some type of networking connection. Most of them have moved to a new position at least once after law school. Hear about the suggestions they have for you regarding various job search strategies and connecting with people who do the work that interests you. Learn how building these skills now will help you with client and business development as a young lawyer.

You finally have an interview with your dream company and you can’t wait to dazzle them with your polished resume, new suit and impressive portfolio.
But wait, you’re meeting over lunch. No problem, right? You’ve eaten lunch before so you’re all set…as long as you know
which way to pass the rolls
what to do with your knife when not in use
the correct way to place your napkin in your lap
which water glass is yours
Believe it or not, knowing the answers to these questions could be the difference between a job offer and a polite, thanks, but no thanks. In today’s competitive job market, more and more employers are taking candidates out for a meal to see how they do in a social situation and being familiar with basic table etiquette can give you the advantage.
What should I expect?
Students will be guided through a 3-course meal by Nicole Feldhues, Director of University Career Services, and learn the ins-and-outs of the dining experience. This event is designed to give you a competitive edge, but more importantly to improve your confidence level and lessen any fears or discomfort you may currently experience at a formal function. Law Faculty & Duquesne Law Alumni Association Board of Governors will also attend to guide discussion during the meal itself.

Students must register for the dinner by Tuesday, January 31, at 6:00 p.m. Registration is $10 (cash or check) and is due at the time of registration. You may register in the Career Service Office – Room 209. Our office hours are 7:45 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (M-TH) and 7:45 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (F). All students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Mock Interview Program coordinated by the Career Services Office. The program will take place from January 18 – February 3, 2017.
In this program, local attorneys and recruiters volunteer to conduct mock interviews with students either at their law firms or at the law school. Each mock interview is scheduled for approximately 30 minutes: 15-20 minutes for the mock interview and 10-15 minutes for feedback on the student’s resume and interview techniques.
You may sign up for as many schedule as your schedule permits. Mock interview appointments will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. You may sign up for as many interviews as your schedule permits. We expect to add a few firms to the list in the coming days, and updates will be published as necessary.
This is a great way to practice your interview skills and receive feedback about your resume before it counts later this semester or next fall during the On-Campus Recruitment Program. We are having an Interviewing Skills Panel on January 17th so students may learn tips they may employ during the mock interviews this semester.
The interviewer will be provided a copy of your resume prior to your mock interview, so please be sure to update your resume in preparation for this program. Information about legal resumes, including sample resumes, can be found in the CSO Handbook (available at http://www.duqlawblogs.org/cso/ ).

The Allegheny County Bar Association (ACBA) Young Lawyers Division (YLD) invites Duquesne Law students to attend their next Council meeting on Thursday, December 1, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in the Koppers Building (downtown). Lunch is provided at YLD meetings.
Bar association involvement and participation leads to tremendous networking opportunities for people looking for jobs so they hear about job leads and meet people who are likely to pass those leads along to them. Similarly, networking is important for attorneys looking for client development opportunities and may be interested in new job prospects. It’s never too early to make your professional connections!
Networking results in approx. 80% of jobs. Take advantage of this invitation and meet the YLD leaders (including some Duquesne Law graduates)! You do not need to be an ACBA student member to attend the meeting.

Students: Make the Most of Your Winter Break
The upcoming winter break provides tons of opportunities for you to reconnect with contacts you’ve made throughout the previous year. Think strategically and use the next several weeks to build and expand your networks.
- If you don’t already possess a stack of business cards, order some today. Your cards should list your name, the name of your school, your anticipated graduation date, and your contact information. Once you have your cards in hand, carry them with you everywhere. The person seated next to you on your post-final-exams trip home just may be the employer of your dreams.
- Set aside an hour or two on Black Friday to send holiday wishes to any professionals you encountered during the previous 12 months. For more casual acquaintances, feel free to send your wishes via email. In the case of a prospective employer, past employer, or alumni of the school, consider sending a holiday card with a brief personal note. This personal communication will help you become memorable, something that never hurts when you need to land your first real job.
- Many offices experience their quietest time of year between Christmas and New Years. Key decision makers who stay in town over the holidays may have more time than normal to sit down and talk with you. Take a risk this holiday season. Make a list of the school’s alumni with whom you would most like to meet and email a meeting request. Don’t give up until you’ve succeeded in scheduling at least one meeting.
- If you plan to return to a city where you worked as a summer associate or intern, use the upcoming break to reconnect face to face with contacts you previously established. A quick coffee or lunch allows you to reconfirm your interest in a prospective employer.
- In addition to meeting with prospective employers, use the winter break to reconnect with peers, college classmates, and the like. They may become important members of your network. And don’t ignore their parents, some of whom may be able to give you direction and even new leads.

Students are invited to meet members of the Allegheny County Bar Association’s (ACBA) various affinity groups at the 7th Annual Law Student Diversity Reception. The event will take place on November 3 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Koppers Building (436 Seventh Avenue – Downtown). You do not have to be a student member of the ACBA to attend.
